Peggy Byrd Foster
Skidaway Island, Georgia
Peggy Byrd Foster passed away at home under the care of Hospice Savannah, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. Peggy was born in Tyler, Texas in 1934 to Jesse and Cassie Byrd. In 1935 the family moved back to Savannah, Georgia to be closer to family and friends. Peggy was raised in Savannah along with her two younger brothers Richard and Steve. She attended local public schools. Peggy married her high school sweetheart, the love of her life, the late William G. Foster, Sr. (Billy), with whom she shared 70 years of marriage. Together, they raised two children, Linda and Bill, Jr. The family enjoyed early years living on the beautiful Isle of Hope. They shared many fun times with family and friends boating to coastal islands, camping, catching blue crab, boiling, and eating them on the beach. They also enjoyed fishing, and water skiing. Peggy was a stay-at-home mom. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, and caring for her family. She was a self-taught seamstress creating beautiful clothes for Linda and Bill and made unique clothes for Linda's dolls. Whatever the task at hand Peggy made sure it was always perfect! Peggy loved and supported her family, always resolute and unswerving.
In 1975, Bill and Peggy moved their family to Skidaway Island and became early "settlers" of The Landings on Skidaway Island. Peggy enjoyed golf, tennis, and everything the island had to offer. She also had an artistic flair and was always trying new hobbies, including quilting and oil painting. Peggy was a devoted Christian, strongly rooted in her faith. She was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Savannah before becoming a Charter Member of the Skidaway Community Church which she and Bill started in their Skidaway Island home living room. In May 2022, Richard Burke, 50th Anniversary History Committee, honored Bill and Peggy, in a published article about the early days on Skidaway Island and they were given the title of "Adam and Eve" of The Landings - the longest, living residents of The Landings.
After their move to Skidaway Island, Bill and Peggy acquired a second home on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Peggy was delighted when her grown children and their families would come together for special times at the beach. She was always the perfect host spoiling everyone with her delicious southern cuisine and hospitality.
Peggy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. In her final days she was comforted by knowing her true and final home was with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Peggy was a former member of The Chatham Club, The Landings Club, The Sea Island Club, and the "Tuesday Lunch Club."
Peggy is survived by her daughter Linda Denhard and son-in-law David Denhard, Sr.; granddaughter, Melissa Phillips (Scott); grandson, David Denhard, Jr. (Brooke); granddaughter, Landon Way (Charles) all of Savannah, Georgia. Peggy is blessed with and is survived by seven great-grandchildren all of Savannah, Georgia. She is also survived by her brother Steve Byrd (Kim) of Savannah, Georgia and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Peggy was predeceased in death by her loving husband, William G. Foster, Sr.; her beloved son, William G. Foster, Jr.; and a brother, Richard Byrd, Sr. all of Savannah, Georgia.
The family expresses deep gratitude to those who loved and cared for Peggy during her illness. Her three "Angels," Debra, Benita and Sharon spent countless hours caring for her. Their devotion and love for Peggy and her family was truly a blessing! Appreciation is also given to Hospice Savannah for their commitment of care, dignity, and love given to Peggy during the final stage of her illness. Special thanks to Nurses Jenni and Kristen who went above and beyond to ensure she was at peace in her final hours.
